PHONE ZAP: DEMAND THAT NON-PROFIT LANDLORDS RESCIND THE EVICTION AT RED VIC AGAINST FISHBOWL COLLECTIVE!

Fishbowl Collective is a multiracial group of trans & gender-nonconforming artists and housing justice advocates striving to create subsidized housing centering San Francisco’s QTBIPOC community.

In August 2020, they began working with Red Victorian LLC (a business owned and operated by the non-profit District Commons) to transform the business’s hotel operations in response to the impact of COVID-19. In November, District Commons filed an egregious eviction lawsuit against Fishbowl Collective members. They are still defending themselves against it, with court proceedings beginning in June.

In addition to Fishbowl Collective residents, a long-term, low-income, disabled tenant is also at risk of eviction and displacement from the historic Red Victorian building amidst a global pandemic and housing crisis without cause.

“Hello,

I am calling in solidarity with Fishbowl Collective and all tenants at the Red Victorian.

I understand that you have a forcible detainer against your tenants after they refused to leave their home without proper cause or notice.

The Fishbowl tenants were brought into the building in a work-live trade in collaboration with your business to transform the hotel into accessible housing for San Francisco’s most vulnerable and housing insecure communities, centering trans women of color. They have garnered immense community support for their work, and are continuing their mission despite your lawsuit.

I am urging you to respect their rights as tenants and to take responsibility for your active role in this conflict. The first step is to reverse your eviction charges against them. They seek accountability and a fair resolution that keeps them housed and supports their mission of housing trans and gender nonconforming communities.

Housing is a human right. Evictions are an enactment of police violence against marginalized individuals, especially during a pandemic.

Thank you for listening to this message and reconsidering your actions.”
