UC Village Tenants

Phone Zap: Demand an Immediate Rent Decrease for UC Village Tenants!

After the keys to 900 units are stolen from the University of California Village office, the UC tells their tenants, who are UC Berkeley students and their children, that they will have to wait two weeks until their locks are changed! This is a safety issue created by the landlord and deserves immediate action. To make matters worse, they told residents to carry their lease agreement on them at all times because University Police will be patrolling, a clear threat to residents of color. This is a false solution to a problem caused by the administration’s negligence. All this in a time when over 150 households cannot pay their rent due to the COVID-19 crisis, and when the UC is considering a 4% rent increase for residents of the village.

Let’s call/email the landlords and ensure they know that the community has their back.

Tell the UC to fix the locks immediately and that we need LOCKS NOT COPS!

(For calling script and numbers, go to the bottom of the page.)

Please follow the next three steps to help their efforts!

Step 1

Sign up for a phone zap time slot – feel free to call, text, and email whenever you want as well. We just want to space out the zap where possible!

STEP 2

Share this flier all over your social media. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or anywhere else!

STEP 3

Call, text, and email right now! You don’t need to have a time slot to participate in the zap. Call, text, and email right now if you can!

Let’s blow their phones up!

Hello, I am calling in solidarity with the residents of the UC Village (or alternately, I am calling as a resident of the UC Village). I understand that you have inadequately secured the master keys to every apartment, resulting in them being stolen, and then asked tenants to remain inside for two weeks and to carry their rental agreements around with them at all times or risk being detained by UCPD. I ask that you take immediate action, securing the village by installing new locks in the next few days. Please comply with the village residents’ demands for rent cancellation during this immediate safety issue.
